  • Medical school dropout James Joyce knew about the utricle. With some artistic license he wrote of "an ovoblastic gestation in the prostatic utricle or male womb." [101]
  • Endometriosis has occurred in men with prostatic carcinoma treated with high doses of estrogens. To explain this, two competing theories have been advanced: (1) hyperplasia and spread of endometrial tissue from the prostatic utricle, and (2) metaplastic transformation of peritoneal cells into endometrial cells. [102]
  • Women may have problems with the remnants of embryological male structures still in their body. This woman's ovarian cyst arose from the rete ovarii, the vestigial homologue of the rete testis that is present in the hilus of every ovary. [103]
