  • "Young women dying of tuberculosis may have a certain ethereal, languorous beauty. This is caused by their heightened color, produced by fever, and their somewhat emaciated state." Such women are called a "Traviata Beauty," after the Verdi opera of the same name. "Traviata" means "the lost one," and in the opera refers to Violetta Valery, a young courtesan who dies of tuberculosis.
       Thoreau made a similar observation in his journal: "Decay and disease are often beautiful, like ... the hectic glow of consumption." [101]
